Art Exhibition
With an artistic practice that spans more than fifty years, eighty year old U Lun Gywe is regarded as Burma's most prominent master painter and one of Southeast Asia's most important senior artists. U Lun Gywe's figurative works of Burmese women are a celebration of their inherent beauty and grace, which he renders through his unique Impressionist style of painting that is a combination of orientalist discipline and western artistic practices. His paintings of dancers and village women, rendered with a vibrant palette and sweeping brushstrokes, are filled with movement - a contrast to his quiet sketches of nudes that aptly reflect his western art training.

Book Launch
Commemorating the more than fifty year artistic career of 80 year old U Lun Gywe – Thavibu Gallery is launching a limited edition coffee table book “Feasting the Female Form” in conjunction with a specially curated exhibition of recent figurative works by the artist. The text is written by the international art historian and curator Shireen Naziree.

This is a very high quality limited edition book, printed in 500 numbered copies. It comes in a boxed edition and each book contains the Giclée art print Nude with Apple - printed on archival paper, signed by the artist U Lun Gywe, and numbered in the same edition as the book.

The book was written and produced in Malaysia and Thailand, and printed by a Singapore company on imported archival paper from Japan.

The exhibition “Have We Forgot?” by Charit Pusiri presents a new series of photography toying with the concept of “Thainess”, an attribute that some Thai people may have overlooked or some even try to forget.

The artist ponders over the said idea, investigating whether there is still Thainess left in the society or has it completely been forgotten? Whether it is because of the familiarity, the bombarding of lifestyle and the trend of globalization that cast over every corner of the world, it clearly has invaded the identity of Thai style of living, culture and tradition so much that now it almost becomes inseparable. In this first-time-ever solo exhibition, this young gifted artist will intrigue viewers with photographs of human, animals and objects in which will leave an open end for them to interpret or question whether they have already forgotten their root and who they really are.

This summer exhibition will show a series of photography by up-and-coming female photographer Cattleya Jaruthavee.

This is her first solo exhibition, only at The Pikture Gallery.

“ Cattleya Jaruthavee portrays the effects of rural - urban migration in Thailand by examining the Northeastern region of Esarn. Emptiness has evolved from young adults leaving the area for larger cities, in search of work opportunities. What's left amidst the lonely landscapes are two extremes – the very young and old. Esarn is also where Thailand's bulk of rice is grown; a job left for the aged... full of uncertainty due to the area's vulnerability to droughts. Esarn's poverty is often looked down upon by larger cities, forgetting their rich culture and rice fields which turn the country's economy. Through photographic documentation, Lonely Land depicts aspects of Northeastern Thailand often forgotten. ”

The exhibition will be on display until Thursday 16th of June 2011

WTF Gallery is pleased to announce an installation of sculpture, Floating, by Sutee Kunavichayanont and the special pre-show offer available from now until 30 April 2011.
Floating is a work that invites you to contemplate beyond the physical realm. The sculptures are detached from the earth — like a consciousness set free. How so? From dreaming, meditating, taking drugs and alcohol or affected by a magic spell? Is it floating because of imagination, reality or deception?
Sutee Kunavichayanont is a leading Thai artist who encourages the viewer to directly and indirectly to participate in his work. Sutee asks the viewer to question, act and react to his works as well as to question themselves and the circumstances around them. Artistic themes that are prevalent in his work are strongly linked to the history and customs of Thailand. Overall his work is sensitive to art, history, politics, his audience and his materials. He uses various mediums including, fiber glass, neon, school desks, metal and gold leafing.
He has had numerous exhibitions in Thailand, Australia, France, Germany, and Korea. His solo exhibtions have been presented by Phuket 346 (Thailand), 100 Tonson Gallery (Thailand), Atelier Frank & Lee (Singapore) Thai Art Foundation (The Netherlands) Optica (Canada) and Musashino Art University (Japan). He also co-curated Thailand’s contribution to the 2005 Venice Biennale. Sutee is also a well known writer and art critic.
Installations of Sutee's have been acquisitioned by H+F Collection (The Netherlands), Singapore Art Museum (Singapore),Thai Farmers Bank PCL (Thailand), Thai Investment and Securities PCL. (Thailand), LASALLE College of the Arts (Singapore),Fukuoka Asian Art Museum (Japan), Queensland Art Gallery (Australia) and Mori Art Museum (Japan).

100 Tonson Gallery proudly presents “Locution-(re)-locations...” the solo exhibition by Phaptawan Suwannakudt, Thai artist based in Sydney, Australia, who creates several artworks in various cultural spaces. This exhibition will offer the concept of the outsider who lives in the different places which hard to carry on the role of being. The exhibition will be on view from 19 May – 10 July, 2011.

Phaptawan Suwannakudt graduated from Silpakorn University, Thailand with a degree in English and German and completed her MVA degree at Sydney College of the Arts, The University of Sydney. She has worked extensively on several full-scale temple schemes and hotel decoration projects in Thailand during 1980s to 1990s. Phaptawan has applied her ideas, practices from experiences and gain the influences and talent from her father. She comes back to her hometown to show selected artworks which have been created during 7 years (the second half of her staying in Sydney for 14 years). Several paintings and object installation will be shown in this exhibition.
Exhibition Period: 19 May – 10 July, 2011 (every Thursday – Sunday)

Merge Visible Layers is a group of 6 young artists who team-up to create a thought provoking group exhibition /Surgery-Fat woman-Repair-Feng Shui-Diary-Stranger/. Six different themes of artwork will be executed by each artist with diverse mediums. Naj searches for aesthetic beauty of women who found solace in plastic surgery. Nisa expresses her true self through symbols of fine arts. Thanistha proposes her way to fill in the cracks caused by the conflict in the society. Atitaya focuses on the connection and the effect Feng-Shui has on the life of Vincent Van Gogh, the world renowned artistic legend. Witaya indulges himself into the human mind once it is effected by the provocations in life. Anecha shoots the life of the homeless at Sanamluang, portraying the caging freedom through his lens. Although this is a group exhibition, each artist shows their profound uniqueness and specialty they have perfected throughout the years.

Human/Time/Space is an exhibition that investigates how humans construct the concepts of time and space and attempt to make sense out of them. Human beings are complex; perhaps nowhere more so than when combining concepts of time and space. Philosophically, humans are trapped in a concept of time and space, and we function and try to make sense of how time and space affect us. Time and space do not exist in a physical world as they have no attributes. We understand them because our minds create meanings for them and use them as an indicator to how to operate and go about life.

This theme allowed each artist to interpret and use their imagination -- coming up with a story, a vision, a commentary—a unique take which is solid, artistic, and worthy.

A highlight of the show is the inclusion of both highly recognized international photographers and young local student artists and professionals, as we explored and searched for some best young new artists to support.

The artworks range from the banal subjective to the emotionally charged and provoking images and from documentary and imaginative figures.

EXHIBITION BACKGROUND
For some time sex has been defined as the biological difference between men and women, and gender as Feminine/masculine, male/female, women/men, boy/girl - terms of sexual and gender division like these permeate the way we think and talk about ourselves and each other. On most occasions we found ourselves easily believe in something just the way we were told, that makes me wonder whether this ease is illusory? One may speculate whether being a woman necessarily implies being "feminine". One may question why young women are often referred to as girls, while men are seldom referred to as boys. Is living in a non-stereotypically feminine manner a reliable indication that one is a bad woman?

There is a folk story of a lady who cannot proof her profound love to her man because her hair was not long enough to stretch through the pagoda’s base, and another folklore about how a women being punished if she love someone before getting married thus led to many queries. Who assign rules to women? To whom women being Possessed? “Possessed/Poach” examines the inquiries in “being woman” under the social-constructed role we might never seriously investigate the underling reasons. Or maybe the only reason is being woman.

The Siam Society under Royal Patronage proudly presents W.A. Mozart’s Requiem, to be performed by the Mahidol University Baroque Choir and Orchestra under the baton of Henri Pompidor.

Universally recognized as one of the greatest choral masterpieces, the Requiem has long been shrouded in mystery. In July 1791, Mozart undertook the commission for an Austrian nobleman, little knowing that he was to write the requiem for himself: he died on December 5 of the same year, at the early age of 35. Inevitably, the secrecy surrounding the anonymous commission, the circumstances of Mozart's death, the unfinished state of the work, and its completion by his copyist, the composer Süssmayr, have precipitated two centuries of romantic speculation and scholarly controversy.

The completed work follows the traditional Latin liturgy and was first performed on January 2, 1793 at a benefit concert for Mozart’s widow Constanza. Since then, it has gained tremendous recognition and has been performed at many prestigious occasions including the memorial services of Joseph Haydn, Frederic Chopin and John F. Kennedy.

In 2002, on the anniversary of the September 11 attacks, a worldwide “Rolling Requiem” project was launched in memory of the 3,000 victims, consisting of a continuous series of performances of the Requiem, circling the earth, crossing all time zones, each beginning at 8:47 a.m. local time, thus marking the time the first plane hit the World Trade Centre.

This masterpiece choral music will be performed at the Siam Society, 131 Soi Asoke, Sukhumvit 21, on Wednesday, March 16, 2011 at 7.30 p.m.

A second concert is scheduled March 18th at Assumption Cathedral Bangkok (near Oriental Hotel) at 7.30 p.m (to be confirmed).

Thavibu Gallery is pleased to present the art exhibition Hidden Flowers with silk paintings by the female Vietnamese artist Nguyen Thi Chau Giang. In Hidden Flowers, her first solo show since 2004, Nguyen Thi Chau Giang looks back to her Vietnamese artistic roots as she explores the formal issues of traditional silk painting. In constructing her visual narratives, Giang draws on sources both classic and contemporary as she mediates on the typical Vietnamese feminine
archetype. Well versed in feminist theories that impact contemporary Vietnamese society, she resists infiltrating her work with the seduction of poetic embellishments as she circumvents typical romantic narratives commonly associated with Vietnamese silk painting.

Such restraint pays off in a body of work that comprises 17 paintings in which Giang explores the contradictions Vietnamese women endure within Vietnam’s advancing contemporary social environment. All of these works explore the fragility of relationships and emotions with a sensitive eye, and they are engaging for that reason. But their formal deftness is also remarkable, as is the richness of their pictorial nuance, which amplifies the psychological interest of the works without drifting into melodrama.

Silk paintings originated in China, and a handful of Vietnamese artists have adopted the art form to produce compelling contemporary art works.

Nguyen Thi Chau Giang is 35 years old, was born in Hanoi and lives in Ho Chi Minh City where she graduated with a Bachelor in Fine Arts. She has participated in several exhibitions internationally, such as in Singapore, Hong Kong, Korea, Australia, Netherlands, Germany, United Kingdom and the USA, including a solo show at the Columbia University, New York. Her works are found in the museum collections of Singapore Art Museum and The Hermitage, St Petersburg.

Is it about happiness or about failure (Zhang Peili), Is it the pride of being pure blood or the shame of be born bastards (Shen Shaomin), will you be offended or will you have a good laugh (Rainer Ganahl), is it about the obvious or the unexpected truth (Yang Zhenzhong), can you keep up with tolerance or will you be easily attracted by intolerance (Artur Zmijewski)?

Curator’s Statement
In this show, artists explore the realm of the doubts, the borders and the passages. It is not about the obvious, it is not about a simple reaction. It is the art of dissimulation, yet it is incredibly true.

In this video-based exhibition, we invite the audience to take time and deepen into the realm of the uncertainty. The artworks presented are videos in various forms: documentaries, performances, conceptual works, and interviews.

It takes time to go through all of it. We are no longer used to spending time and concentrating for long: we live in the realm of the quickly digested images and information, but there is a revolutionary need for rediscovering attention and dedication. It is not about consuming another exhibition as a social event. Instead, it is a very intimate experience – the one proposed here. It is a time of pause, almost a praying time, I would say.

When I have been asked to put together this show, I thought of my last years in Thailand and Bangkok and I wanted to express through this curatorial adventure my own connection with the Thailand I discovered. When I think back of the last two years in Bangkok, with all the unrest and social and political uncertainty, the works chosen for this show seem to me very significant and universal. It is quite a testimony to the uneasiness that I feel – and I am sure many other people do – when thinking about nationalism, ethnicity and power mirrored by a personal/private space, poetry and the death as beauty, or as Bohumil Hrabal explains in “I served the King of England”:

“The essence of life was questioning about death, how will I behave when my hour comes, and that basically death, or rather that questioning oneself, is a dialogue from an infinite and eternal visual angle. (And that) the resolution of the problem of death is already the beginning of thinking in terms of beauty and the beginning of thinking about beauty because it is savoring the absurdity of one’s path that anyway will end with a premature exit, that pleasure of experiencing one’s own demise, that fills man with bitterness and therefore with beauty.”

About Davide Quadrio aka Dadou
Davide Quadrio is a sinologist, curator and art historian. He founded BizArt, Shanghai's first non-profit art centre, in 1998. Stemming from this experience and a decade working in cross cultural matters (Davide was awarded 2004 the title of young leader for culture in Asia by IIAS and ASEF in Den Hague, The Netherlands) in 2007, Quadrio together with Defne Ayas started Arthub Asia, a cultural and artistic constellation of independent thinkers devoted to contemporary art creation in China and across Asia. n the forthcoming exhibition, Jittagarn Kaewtinkoy has produced a series of portraits and paintings of well known politicians and of iconic personalities with the intent to explore their sense of commitment towards freedom and justice. It turns out that they often fall into two categories – good and bad. As a person committed to freedom, justice and transparency himself, the artist questions his subjects' intentions and aspirations and whether they are sincere or exploit their positions as leaders and role models.

Jittagarn Kaewtinkoy is 32 years old and is known for his ironic paintings of people in power. He graduated from Rajamonkol University in 2001 and has participated in several exhibitions in Thailand and also in the USA (2010).

Introduction by Steven Pettifor:
Unsurprisingly, Thailand’s artists tend to become more politicised in the wake of dramatic social upheavals and intermittent military interventions. During the student led demonstrations and subsequent crackdowns of 1973 and 1976, artists Pratuang Emjaroen and Prasong Luemuang led the dissenting charge, while after the bloody coup of 1992 it was Vasan Sitthiket along with Chumpon Apisuk and the Ukabat (fireball) performance artists who were quick to voice their hostility to the military takeover.

Thailand’s most recent military putsch of 2006 once again roused artists to visualise interpretations upon the consequential dilemmas facing Thai society. Yet aside from the firebrand Vasan and critical photographer Manit Sriwanichpoom, there have been few overtly political artists to commentate on the entrenched cronyism and corruption that have become the mainstay of Thai politics.

To the neutral observer, Thailand has never appeared a more divided country. This growing disharmony has begun registering and permeating the art of emerging artists, including 32-year-old painter Jittagarn Kaewtinkoy.

Sombat Permpoon Gallery is delighted to present abstract contemporary paintings and sculptures “ Impromptu ” (Don-sod) by Naruemon Padsamran.

Naruemon’s work is inspired by her appreciation of the unique, lively tempo and conversational style of singing in found in the type of Thai folk music from the Isaan area known as Luk –Tung and Mor-Lam. From this passion for the music, Naruemon creates her art by evolving old Thai folk concert billboards into abstract contemporary paintings and sculptures which convey the “postures” and “rhythm” of Thai Folk music dancers, known as Hang-Kreung. These dancers, usually found performing behind the singers, are moved, from a typical outdoor stage where such concerts are staged, to a gallery space, as part of Naruemon’s vision to communicate the movement and music within a still object.

“Impromptu” Mo-Lam is defined as composing music while in the moment, simultaneously singing or playing an instrument in response to another Mo-Lam band. Naruemon also defines the “Impromptu” series as a conversation within herself, using her success and learning from her failures in the past 3 years to create series of dialogues within her creativity and materials into her improvisation (Don-sod)of Mo-Lam

After 4 successful workshops in Bangkok and Chiangmai the following book was made: Playing Arts in a Thai way, full of examples how Playing Arts has been adapted in Thailand.The exhibition shows pictures and traces from the workshops. There are also participation activities in order to animate guests to creative actions.

I am thrilled by the photographs taken by the Hubble Space Telescope of outer space and distant galaxies. The beauty of these amazing photographs has a mystical quality.

I discovered that I could create a blend of my painting and drawing with photographs of the galaxies, and this discovery has opened a universe of possibilities for my art work.

My experience as a ballet dancer has a significant influence on my work. I am enamored with the beauty of line and movement in dance, and much of my work has focused on capturing the strength, muscle tension, and abandon of dancers in motion. I often give my work the feeling of movement even when the subject isn’t about dance.

Some of my pieces use birds as a focus, and others feature elephants, and even giraffes. There is such a grace and beauty in these animals, that to me is earthly and also has an unearthly quality. I like to blend a combination of the universe and a cloudy blue sky to create a connection between people, animals, the earth, and the stars.

Music is another theme that is a natural for this concept, and my husband, a musician, makes a great model. I often create pieces with forms that are not immediately apparent. I might put an elephant within an elephant, or a small dancer almost hidden against a galactic background. I use colors and patterns that make the form visible only after looking closely.

All of the pieces in this show are cast acrylic collage prints, and all of them have an element of the universe or “night sky.” I created these prints over the past year drawing from my thoughts and dreams about people, Thailand, and my life.

“Nang Songkran” by Sompop Budtarad presents paintings depicting the legend of Nang Songkran (Thai Goddesses of Songkran), the urban story that relates to the Buddhist belief and the local way of life closely connected to the agricultural culture and society. The artist applies the symbol of fine art as the means to transmit his notions, beliefs, and the beauty of a goddess named Kirinee Dhevi, the Songkran goddess of the year 2011. Kirinee Dhevi dresses elegantly and has a magnolia behind her ear. She mounts on an elephant, her food is nuts and sesame and her gem is emerald. While on her hands there is a hook on the right and an arm gun on the left.

“ Impromptu ” (Don-sod) by Naruemon Padsamran

Sombat Permpoon Gallery is delighted to present abstract contemporary paintings and sculptures “ Impromptu ” (Don-sod) by Naruemon Padsamran.

Naruemon’s work is inspired by her appreciation of the unique, lively tempo and conversational style of singing in found in the type of Thai folk music from the Isaan area known as Luk –Tung and Mor-Lam. From this passion for the music, Naruemon creates her art by evolving old Thai folk concert billboards into abstract contemporary paintings and sculptures which convey the “postures” and “rhythm” of Thai Folk music dancers, known as Hang-Kreung. These dancers, usually found performing behind the singers, are moved, from a typical outdoor stage where such concerts are staged, to a gallery space, as part of Naruemon’s vision to communicate the movement and music within a still object.

“Impromptu” Mo-Lam is defined as composing music while in the moment, simultaneously singing or playing an instrument in response to another Mo-Lam band. Naruemon also defines the “Impromptu” series as a conversation within herself, using her success and learning from her failures in the past 3 years to create series of dialogues within her creativity and materials into her improvisation (Don-sod)of Mo-Lam

Subsequent to the exhibition on paintings of elephants at the Neilson Hays Library during 2002-2006, begun from being impressed with the elephant’s conflicting character having an external image of being huge, with black rough skin, but with a cute and intelligent personality. This caused the artist to continue to draw elephants until this animal has become a symbol or his signature work.

His artwork since 2005 has therefore been increasingly added with other symbols such as birds,
trees, falling leaves, and a variety of surroundings. All of these are meant to relate the painter’s feeling at that very moment.

The exhibition to be held again in 2011 will display the symbols of the rabbit and the moon and will represent the artist’s imagination which tells of his fear of losing it as the result of increasing
burdens in making a living. When time permits to look back at himself, he wants to preserve this imagination as long as possible because the path of those who create artworks this part of the imagination is the most important.

Tada Hengsapkul, born in 1987 in Nakhon Ratchasima, has had a camera in his hands since the age of fifteen.

This very passionate young Thai photographer uses film cameras and video to capture hidden identities of his homeland, Thailand.

The freshness and realism of his photos shift conventional standards of image making in Thailand as well as old power structures and

pre-defined gender roles. The crudeness of the nudes, the sexually explicit pose of his models, and the irony of certain scenes emphasize

the gap between his works and photos which are praised by the local critique and censorship board.

This exhibition is Hengsapkul's first solo show in Bangkok; it presents a broad selection of quality works.

From landscapes to nude, portraits and abstract color fields Hengspkul's photos all have a strong emotional

and elegiac core which will certainly not leave the viewer indifferent.

a performance by French artist SKALL

Since the 80ies French artist Skall has elaborated a unique work between, sculpture, installation and performance. This black sheep of the French contemporary art scene evolves in a world of Baroque hybrid figures and objects. The works remind of certain religious ornaments, in which relics, sculptures and amulets are presented on stands, in glass boxes, or cushions with an infinate string of decorative elements meant to highlight the presented object and lift it to a sacred stage. As his sculptures and installations, Skall's performances lift him to a different stand. By accumulating chosen objects, for their beauty or symbolism his body slowly evolves in a non human creature. Every performance is a splendorous metamorphosis; An explosion of colors and forms giving birth to an ephemeral God, Faune or mystical animal.

SOCIETY SECRETS
An insitu work by Hungarian artist SI-LA-GI

SI-LA-GI was born in Tokaj, Hungary in 1949 and emigrated via Italy to Sweden in 1966.
There he studied painting at the Academy of Fine Art and later continued his studies at the University of Stockholm (Science of visual arts). In the meantime he also worked with experimental film and photography in the 1960s and from 1973 also with videos. He was the pioneer in the mid-1970s who began making installations using video. At the end of the 1970s he was co-founder of the Video Nu Studio in Stockholm which gave artists the opportunity to create experimental arts. In his art he uses diverse media, including photography, video, sculpture and installation. His works are concept and philosophy-based investigations of impermanence, life and death, and individual opportunities. Between 1980-1986 he taught art video and painting in Stockholm. He has travelled widely throughout the United States of America, Africa and Asia, where he developed his interest in Buddhism. His martial art studies and long Buddhist retreats have had a great influence on his concept-based art.

Experience the Japanese artistic temperament through 64 contemporary craftworks

What are the common characteristics of contemporary Japanese crafts? Refinement? Simplicity? Ostentatious colors? Or deformation?

The Japan Foundation, Bangkok in cooperation with Bangkok Art and Culture Centre proudly presents Contemporary Japanese Crafts Exhibition. The exhibition features 64 outstanding artifacts from various craft genres, including ceramics, glassware, lacquer ware and metalwork, all created by famous Japanese artists.

Japanese crafts have long history and have absorbed influences from various sources; in ancient times ideas and techniques came from China and Korea but more recently, during the modern era, artistic ideas have been incorporated from the West. These influences have been worked into craftworks over time as artists gradually developed craftworks that reflect Japanese characteristics with traditional forms and decorative embellishments. The techniques and aesthetics of craftworks have been handed down from generation to generation.

The sheer number of genres and variety of techniques used in craft production make it difficult to say exactly what the defining and common attributes of contemporary Japanese crafts actually are. In order to make this clearer to viewers, the curators have classified the 64 works into six common themes: Ostentation, Quiet Refinement, Crispness, Fine Detail, Deformation, Flowers and Birds.

For over twenty years, I have been on an artistic path, with eight years of running art activities for the children of Sanjorn Sorn Silpa Free Art Project. Traveling around Thailand and some parts of Laos is part and parcel of my existence. And painting is my way of capturing the many beautiful types of scenery that surrounds me. This art exhibit chronicles through art the beauty of nature. I was impressed by the simple way of people’s lives as well as flowers, rivers, mountains, and architectures. The best way for me to capture the magnificence of the place was to put them on canvas and on paper in different techniques of drawing, water color, acrylic and oil painted.

Besides painting, I love sharing my knowledge and the beauty of art with children. As we all know, there is a lack of art teachers and equipment in many remote places in Thailand. My passion to teach brings forth smiles and happiness among the children. Their enthusiasm and high spirits are much more beautiful than any artwork. For me, it is an art masterpiece.

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Sanjorn Sorn Silpa Free Art Project, which teaches art for free to poor Thai children in remote places. I have been running this project for over 8 years, held more than a hundred places all over Thailand.

2010 was a tumultuous year for Bangkok as on-going political and social discontent segued into violent and deadly protest. The international media paid close attention with a near-senseless proliferation of apocalyptic images of a city besieged. After the protests ended, the Thai government sponsored a campaign that called on this country to unite in view of the publicized fissures.

The title of this exhibition employs a device from the discipline of semiotics in order to communicate ideas of signification rather than representation: the forward slashes of /Bangkok/. In this respect, Bangkok can be considered as the subject of variable meanings and not an entity to be strictly defined. From the recent media images of protest to pervasive views of this city as a symbol of excess to tourist notions of Thailand as halcyon, Bangkok’s current global image appears to be the object of competing interpretations. /Bangkok/ explodes this sense of competition by insisting on the idiosyncratic and the provocative as the basis for any understanding of the city in terms of place, space and representation. /Bangkok/ provides new insights, challenges normalized perceptions and gives value to unpredictable knowledge.

The artworks range from the coolly subjective to the emotionally redolent and from skewed topologies and aggressive realism to surreal analogies.

I want to show how the arms of happiness and peacefulness have enveloped me in my life. In childhood, I stayed with my grandmother and grandfather in the countryside where I was in touch with the simple life of the farmers and those who lived in an agrarian society.

At that time I was too young and inexperienced to appreciate the value of such a life. Now that I have grown and experienced other ways of living and other ways of life, I appreciate what peace
and tranquility I had when living the simple life of a farmer. I am privileged to have had such an experience and to have known happiness and peacefulness of my life.

I wish I could turn back the clock and reach out and touch that life again, but that is impossible as time has marched on and everything in the world has changed.

The memories and feelings I store in my mind, I now transmit to my paintings. I hope by sharing these images, others will see the values and beauty of the agrarian life.

She is an outstanding and distinguished young Japanese-Thai artist. This time, we are presenting her solo show in town with her signature quirkiness on paintings by the use of vivid colors, often employed to create a hidden message. She always collects and records what she feels, sees, and experiences by blending her imagination to her works.

This exhibition will tell us about the changing surroundings and also politic liberty which led everything to violence and depression. It seems that we cannot find the feeling of security in anywhere. The artist would like to discover a best shortcut for escapade, but it’s rarely hard to find.

In 2010, Yuree has launched various works by participation with local and international activities such as Big Mountain music festival 2010, “For” wall painting exhibition at Bangkok Art and Culture Center, Bangkok, Thailand and the special illustration for music video of a song titled Pleng Pry by Pry & May-T Project (collaboration with Thai animator Yongvit Santanaphanich). Moreover, Yuree has also shown her large paintings as one of the selected 10 participants in Kuandu Biennale 2010, Taipei, Taiwan.

Born in 1979 in Bangkok, After graduating from the Department of Visual Arts in Bangkok University in 2002, her works were presented in several solo and group exhibitions including the 2003 Brand New at the Art Gallery, Bangkok University, Bangkok, 108 Paths to Vanity in 2004 at 100 Tonson Gallery, Bangkok, One On Other, a workshop and exhibition at About Studio/ About Cafe, Bangkok, in 2005, and created big murals in “FOR” Wall Painting Showcase by groups of Thai graphic designers and artists at Bangkok Art and Culture Center, Bangkok, Thailand in 2010, and In 2007 Kensaku has presented her solo exhibition Love in platinum Frame at the Art Center, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand, as well as being an artist in residency and held solo show The Adventure of Momotaro Girl at the Yokohama Museum of Art, Yokohama, Japan. Kensaku is due to hold another solo show, titled Same Place While The Clock’s Hands Pace, exhibiting brand new works at Gallery Ver, an artist run space, in Bangkok Thailand after a curatorial request by Rirkrit Tiravanija. In 2009, Yuree has held 3 solo exhibitions locally and internationally, Bejing China, Taipei Taiwan, and Bangkok, Thailand. Yuree is one of selected 10 artists participates in Kuandu Biennale 2010, Taipei, Taiwan.

Cal Lyall (b. Montreal, Canada) is an improvising artist and electronic musician based in Tokyo, Japan.

Constructing a musical universe from field recordings, stringed instruments, microphone systems and other electronic debris, his diverse contributions to numerous projects reflect a bevy of influences, ranging from traditional forms to free-flowing drone and ecstatic improvisation.

Currently active in the drone-psych trio Tetragrammaton, ecstatic choral unit Jahiliyyah, and performs as a solo artist with a number of distinctive artists such as Tetuzi Akiyama, Chie Mukai, Government Alpha and Kelly Churko among others.

Also heads up the Subvalent label and organizes the long-running Test Tone series at Super-Deluxe in Nishi-Azabu, Tokyo.

Number1Gallery proudly presents Longing for Siam, Inventing Thailand, by Sutee Kunavichayanont an exhibition of contemporary art that yearns for a past when Thailand, her borders constantly shifting and indeed sometimes contracting even as she sought territorial expansion, was on the brink of becoming a powerful nation.

Sutee Kunavichayanont is a leading Thai artist who first came to prominence in 1998 with his elephant, buffalo and tiger-shaped breath donation sculptures crafted from rubber. A second seminal series, History Class, was begun in 2000. Interactive, the series, appearing in several forms from the turn of the century, is composed of re-appropriated children’s wooden school desks that the artist has engraved with scenes illustrating Siamese/Thai history. Extending an invitation to all viewers to make rubbings from the engraved surfaces of the desks, Sutee is in fact giving his audience the opportunity to produce their own Thai political history text books.

Sutee had participated in several significant international art events such as 1st Liverpool Biennial of Contemporary Arts (1999) in the United Kingdom, and the 5th Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, Brisbane, Australia (2006). His works are in the collections of prominent art museums and galleries worldwide including the Mori Art Museum, Japan, The Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Japan, the Singapore Art Museum, Singapore, and the Queensland Art Gallery, Australia. In 2006, Sutee received a prestigious Manas Siensing Red Award 2 from the Pridi Banomyong Institute for his outstanding artistic creations and art related contributions.

Longing for Siam, Inventing Thailand, is a solo exhibition featuring Sutee’s latest body of works. With these new works, the artist invites viewers to look back at “Thai Mai” (New Thailand) from the 1930s to 1940s, a period when national unity was being built, the government using art to construct the nation. The show aims to offer a flashback to a time when the Kingdom of Siam’s early borders were being drawn. And during those years when the Kingdom’s physical outline was evolving, the “hats and shoes” were striving to make Thailand a powerful nation and extremely patriotic state.

Longing for Siam, Inventing Thailand is an installation comprising 600 small plaster soldiers, stop-motion video projections, and a video performance of the artist drawing on a huge black wall. The installation is presented in a setting designed to evoke the historical period preoccupied with the leadership’s slogan “Mala Nam Thai Soo Maha Umnaj” [The hats that lead Thailand to become a great nation.]. Viewers will be encouraged to participate in national map-making in an atmosphere that, thanks to old patriotic songs and tunes, recalls those long-ago times.

People hesitant to call Vasin an artist, a photographer, a designer or a businessman but to his students calls him ajarn. Vasin’s background in architecture and growing up in an architect’s family makes him a creator in the blood. Depicting abstract ideas into concrete images is his expertise.

Born in Bangkok but raised in the US for many years. His parents’ work gave him plenty of opportunities to travel in foreign countries. Therefore, Vasin became a stranger to his own culture when he returned to Thailand, making him perceive things differently. Seeing different cultures, Vasin has become passionate about the environment in diverse perspective through visual communications.

After he graduated from Chulalongkorn University, he went back to the US to study architecture and worked there for 4 years. His education and work focused on design and communication which includes techniques like computer-aided architectural design, 3D Modeling, 3D Animation and digital imaging. With these techniques, he is able to transform abstracts ideas into concrete images. Vasin perceives these techniques as valuable assets to architecture that should be taught to new generations. It inspired him to a lecturer in design & communication at King Mongkut’s Insitute of Technology when he returned to Thailand. He has also been invited to lecture in various universities such as Chulalongkorn University, Thammasat University and Kasem Bundit University.

With interest in publication and communication he became the editor of Thailand prestigious magazine “Hi-class”. He started to explore online publication and started “At-Bangkok.com” a visual travel lifestyle guide to Bangkok and throughout Thailand. From this point on he sees Bangkok in many different perspectives. And started to collect panoramic photographs of places he has been.

Bangkok NOW! is 19 rare collection of thousands of panorama Vasin has selected. That provides different perspective of Bangkok and an overall impression of this mega city. This is his 4th solo exhibition. It will be display at the V9 Wine Bar and Restaurant, Sofitel Bangkok Silom, from now – January 31, 2011.

Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana presides over the opening ceremony of her “Soft Power” photography exhibition and showcases her latest innerwear creation “PRINCESS COLLECTION”. This special collection was created to raise funds for the establishment of The Breast Cancer Center at the National Cancer Institute.
According to HRH Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana, “Last September I paid a visit to a number of cancer patients at the National Cancer Institute, and was informed of the multiple challenges confronting this worthy institute, in particular their struggles to establish a Breast Cancer Center. As a result, I determined to utilize my design skills and related abilities to contribute to this much-needed project.”
“The reason that I opted to design a collection of innerwear is very straightforward; it is a special creation designed specifically to support the Breast Cancer Center. The product that I determined would best convey the objectives of this project is innerwear, which can also attract contributions from other women through their support of my collection. In short, it is an outstanding charity project in which all of us can join hands in solidarity to help those unfortunate women suffering from breast cancer.”
In referring to the inspiration for her latest collection, HRH Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana says, “For a woman, wearing innerwear is equally as vital as laying a solid foundation for a building. In that same regard, I feel that a designer’s most important role is to shape and design the human body's structure and contour. For this collection, I put special emphasis on color, cut, and materials. As it is my first collection of innerwear, I wish to create my own identity in this métier; the designs have to be modern, and both colours and materials must be unique. Most importantly, this collection must reflect the true aesthetic values of haute couture.”
Princess Collection is comprised of 29 individual sets outstanding for the application of advanced cutting techniques and sophisticated materials ranging from ribbon, sheer lace and refined satin, to glittering crystals. The collection was created in four distinctive themes:

• Flower – These innerwear sets in floral themes highlight feminine beauty, delicacy, and sexiness. Key materials are French and Italian sheer lace. They were created utilizing innovative cutting techniques.
• Gladiator – The sets under this theme incarnate a woman’s battle in every step of her life, and celebrate the unbelievable strength of women. Black is the key colour, rendering these sets mysterious but impressive, adorned with Swarovski Crystals.
• Neo-Romantic - These sets remind viewers of a woman’s confidence, imagination, and romantic mood – a range of emotions understood only within the sisterhood of women. The innerwear in these sets are luxurious, sexy, and curiously unique thanks to the combination of lace and satin in hot hues.
• Instinct – These sets represent a woman’s maternal instincts to protect her child. The message is conveyed through printed graphics on innerwear created with special techniques. A perfect example of this is the use of blowing smoke patterns and structure which create the image of a herd of horses fleeing danger in a natural setting.

HRH Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana adds “For this project, I expanded my involvement into the role of photographer – which constitutes my debut in the world of fashion photography. I took pictures for three separate projects – the advertising campaign for PRINCESS COLLECTION, the photo feature in Lips magazine, and for the “Soft Power” photography exhibition. The latter endeavor is a value-added continuation of the PRINCESS COLLECTION.”
Referring to her new role as a photographer, the young Princess says, “I was very excited by the challenge, but at the same time beset by pressure. At the beginning, I sought advice from friends and acquaintances who are professional photographers. In that period I viewed a wide range of photo exhibitions. Later, I worked to develop my own style, identity and inspiration before learning lighting techniques, the use of lenses, and methods of creating mood through photography. Eventually, I finalized the concept and all details of the three segments of this major project. I had to ensure that all of them flowed in the same direction and reflected the main themes of PRINCESS COLLECTION. Slight differences in details are permissible, of course, so as to reflect the nature of individual groups of works.”
HRH Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana’s “Soft Power” photography exhibition stands as evidence of the creator’s great natural talent in photography. The exhibition can be divided into 5 zones - Neo-Romantic, Instinct, Flower, Gladiator, and Behind the Scene. The photo display is highly unique with multi-media and mixed-media presentations resulting from the Princess’ creative ideas.

The innerwear from the PRINCESS COLLECTION is now available at leading department stores. Prices start from 2,000 Baht. All customers who make a purchase over 6,000 Baht will be entitled to the privilege of a breast cancer examination at participating hospitals. Part of the proceeds will support the establishment of The Breast Cancer Center at the National Cancer Institute.
The photography exhibition “Soft Power” is open to the public on the 4th Floor of Bangkok Art and Culture Center from December 16th, 2010 to February 15th, 2011. The center is open Tuesday – Sunday from 10.00 AM – 9.00 PM (closed on Monday).

Fragments of lights and colors reveal themselves through the veiled walls. The audience is invited to enter each one to discover the contexts and narratives within.

Drawing from hypothesized national identities, propaganda theories, and the frayed edges of unsettled socio-political quandaries, five artists engage in rationalizing and memorializing of the damages – both physical and psychological – caused by the violent conflicts of May this year.

In an array of pieces – installations, sculptures, projections and graphic art are displayed within a series of rooms on the 2nd floor of the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre. Walls are deconstructed, illuminating what would otherwise be disregarded, unrecognized, or avoided.

Following last year’s success, Bangkok University Gallery is excited to bring you the second dose of an exhibition by the faculty of School of Fine and Applied Arts at Bangkok University, titled “SOS”.

SOS is widely known as a distress signal, seeking for immediate assistance. Originated as a Morse code, SOS is sometimes employed through visual displays where one must battle with numerous obstacles in order to create an effecti...ve signal to obtain help. Even though no one is stranded on a deserted island, still, the faculty of School of Fine and Applied Arts creatively builds signals through different mediums to communicate - sharing stories thoughts and ideas - with the public. Rather than hoping to be rescued, the faculty is waiting to be discovered.

This end of year exhibition will show a fascinating combination of contemporary photography and antique photos from the early 1900s from Christophe Loviny's book; The Apsaras of Angkor.

“ Apsaras are mythical celestial nymphs who are messengers of joy and beauty between Cambodian kings and their gods. The sacred Apsara dance transforms ordinary girls into magical creatures which is captured through Loviny's lenses. Witnessing their metamorphisis, this exhibition shines a light on this World Heritage oral tradition.

We will also be exhibiting a must-see water colour sketches printed on silk by the famous Auguste Rodin of Cambodia's royal court dancers who accompanied King Sisowath to France for the 1906 Colonial Exposition in Marseille."

The "fm syhthesis" sound of sound blaster 16 and how piano roll sequencing inspired june to compose music for vdo game by his imagination influenced by soundtracks of classic '80 RPG nintendo games when they were young. "Not a musician, don't have any good music skill... I just know what I want and I do."  Neuter Lover started her music scene as a Bedroom Studio artist, she delivers a blend of Ambient and Shoegaze music with sound of computer programming and noise Guitar.  With her unique of vocal and music sounds, In 2005, Her demo was nominated for 15 finalists of FAT Awards 3 - 'Bedroom Artist of The Year' (by FAT Radio, FM 104.5). And the demo song 'Find' was published on DDT Magazine's compilation CD vol.4. Additionally, she was honored to be selected to perform live in Fete de la Music 2005, as the highest scorer of her self-produced 10 demoed songs.   And as soon as she released her demos on the Internet, she was invited to be vocalist/songwriter of the duo band 'Acid Lily', founded by a japanese electronica artist. The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Embassy of France proudly present A baroque Christmas concert with Marc Antoine Charpentier and Johann Sebastian Bach on Tuesday, December 21st & Wednesday 22nd, 2010 at the Chulalongkorn Auditorium (CU Cultural Building) in Bangkok at 8.00pm.

Under the baton of Henri Pompidor, the choral director at Mahidol University, the concert will feature the Mahidol University Baroque Choir and Orchestra performing three famous choral baroque pieces, including Charpentiers Te Deum and two Bach Cantatas for the Advent and Christmas period.

The concert will first take us to the Grand Sicle of Louis XIV in Versailles. With Marc Antoine Charpentier and his well-known Te Deum (H146), we have the unique opportunity to taste the great music of the Chapelle royale de Versailles at the end of the 17th century in France. This piece for choir, soloists and instrumental ensemble (with very famous fanfare in the opening)
traces a sacred link uniting the King and all his people. It represents one of the best spotlights on the French baroque musical language, whose archaic and modern style of writing and vocal and instrumental colors are always written with brightness and elegance.

The second part of the concert takes us to Christmas under Bach's musical rule, yet the glorious feeling is quite similar. The two Bach Cantatas introduces Christmas time with two feasting pieces which give joy and happiness to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ: Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (BWV 140) is set as a call to ask the Christian to be ready ("Hey, wake up, the voice
calls to us One of the characteristics of this cantata is the personification of characters sung by solo singers interacting together in a musical dialogue follows a long tradition in European music history.

The second cantata Christen, รคtzet diesen Tag (BWV 63), is also exceptional because of its own different structure with a complete lack of chorale, the traditional Lutheran hymn. Built in symmetrical and pyramidal structure, this cantata shows a wonderful vocal music with soloist, chorus and orchestra. In this piece, Christmas does not represent only the birth of the Jesus Christ, but a period of transition for everyone, a hope for the people who suffer in the
world they can find comfort and support.

100 Tonson Gallery proudly presents the last exhibition of this year 2010 “Hybrid Technology” by Porntaweesak Rimsakul, who creates art for fun. He was distant since the last solo show ‘Porntaweesak’s exhibition’ in 2006 that leaded him to participate in several international exhibition such as, ATTITUDE 2007, The Contemporary Art Museum, Kumamoto, Japan and the only Thai Artist who shown in 10th International Istanbul Biennial, Turkey in 2007. Porntaweesak Rimsakul

Born in 1979 in Udonthani, northern Thailand. Graduating from the Department of Visual Arts in Bangkok University in 2002, and a Master's degree in Painting from Silapakorn University 2005, Rimsakul’s works have been presented at many international art exhibitions. These include the 2005 Actes de Fe i de Generositat, a performance with Peter Baren at La Bisbal d'Empordà & Barcelona in Spain, T1 Torino Triennale Tremusei at Castello di Rivoli Museo d'Arte Contemporanea, Rivoli, Turin, Italy, and Politics of Fun at Haus Der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin, Germany (travelling to Austria and Japan). In September-October 2006, his works were exhibited at Soi Project 2006 at the Saint–Sulpice, Paris, in early 2007 Rimsakul participated in the group show All About Laughter at the Mori Art Museum, Tokyo, ZKM: Thermocline of Art, Asian New Waves at ZKM in Germany, and ATTITUDE 2007 at the Contemporary Art Museum, Kumamoto, Japan. Moreover being the only Thai artist in the 10th International Istanbul Biennial, Turkey, 2007. In the context of Thai contemporary art, the topic of “education” is often rendered in a critical and sarcastic tone, since this is what everyone has directly experienced, mostly with a doubtful mind. This time, education is seen through the eyes of Suthee Kunawichayanont, an artist who has long been criticizing the concept of being Thai, especially the structure and manifestation of power in language and education, which are always emphasized in his visual arts. Now his works will be co-exhibited with works by Phromtum Worawut, a recent graduate from Bangkok University. Although Phromtum is a new name in the art community, his works make distinguished appearance with frustration towards the educational system. Launching this exhibition with a senior artist like Suthee, he will present two-dimensional works which satirize the “multiple-choice” society in an unexpectedly interesting way.

Beyond images in the works of both artists is an experience imbued with elements of sarcastic black comedy in a quiet but unreliable atmosphere. It brings us back to the time when we were students sitting in a classroom, a familiar circumstance which had consumed a part of our lives since earliest childhood.

How we see the world influences the world we live in. In times of great chaos and conflict, there is often a desperate need to find an explanation as to why a certain problem occurs and what will be the solution to that problem. Based on facts as much as assumptions, referencing philosophies as much as statistics, debates and discussions are formed to address ‘the truth’ of ‘the matter’ and reach a consensus on a resolution.

A Brief View Of Everything, a two-person exhibition by British artist Justin Mills and Dutch/Italian artist Franco Angeloni, offers itself as a platform to engage the viewer in this dialogue. Featuring Mills’ iconic '48 Portraits Of God' series and Angeloni’s combination of messages and happenings, the show creates a challenge to people’s perception and proposes a different view, or different views, with which we can see the world, ourselves and one another. At times shocking and indefinite, their art attempts to widen any fixed, narrow and judgmental point of view we may have and gives a glimpse of perspectives that are more open and inclusive, even when those perspectives are difficult for us to take in.

48 Portraits Of God

What do Lady Gaga, Nazi gas chambers, Prince Siddartha and Japanese bondage all have in common? They are all God according to British artist Justin Mills, who suggests that 'perhaps God is Everything and Everything is God' and he attempts to make this possibility more real in his paintings. After twenty five years of studying the world's spiritual philosophies he has come to understand that this simple, profound proposition of non-duality is found at the core of all the great wisdom traditions. It is the intrinsic, underlying unity of all things indicated in the art of all the great religions that he is now trying to reveal in a new form of post-post-modern art, or 'integral art', as it transcends and includes as much as possible. This is art concerned more with Self-expression than mere self-expression. But these paintings are not just illustrations for a spiritual philosophy, their provocative ambiguity gives the viewer plenty to do in terms of interpretation, and yet they can also be enjoyed simply for their radiant beauty.

Mills says: “When the word 'God' is used in the titles of my paintings it does not refer to the orthodox Christian notion of an external, all-powerful, judgmental being. It refers more to something beyond good and evil, something internal and external, both transcendent and imminent, something that American philosopher Ken Wilber describes, in his book ‘The Integral Vision’, as:

'a ground of all being; a universal consciousness; a pure, infinite, transcendental, selfless Self; beyond any conceptualizations at all, but as simple and obvious as the person who is reading this...'”

Franco Angeloni
Dutch/Italian artist Franco Angeloni’s art is full of curiosity and the wish to understand life and perfect it – life that is a mystery no one has a complete understanding of but marvelously unfolds itself in front of the eyes of the person who lives it every second. Everything that exists in nature can become a motive for Angeloni to speculate upon and to use as a means to shape his work and thus get a better insight into the world.

As a conceptual response to Mills’ ‘48 Portraits Of God’, Angeloni created ‘messages’ – some of which have been laser cut in metal plates, and ‘happenings’ that are curious and playful. Yet, these works ask several difficult questions about one’s perception and attitude toward living. One message says ‘Welcome to the 8th Floor’ despite the fact there is no 8th Floor in the building of The Art Center. With one special work entitled ‘Device To Enable Myopic People To Capture Mr/Mrs Ambition From A Closer Distance’, visitors are challenged to scrutinize the panoramic view from the balcony of The Art Center with binoculars to discover a neon work which is actually hidden in the cityscape. Anyone can participate of their own free will. Also, lying beneath his most recent work is the teachings of Indian philosopher J. Krishnamurti. In Angeloni’s works, the viewer will see the artist’s reflection on the master’s philosophy, which addresses all things humankind has been dealing with for thousands of years, from love and fear to desire and envy, from power-gaining to a true inner mind revolution, from spirituality to the disastrous consequences of human ambition.

Angeloni says: “I am not expecting anybody out there to make this world better for me, for us all. The revolution I am talking about is not that which occurs in the Houses of legislators or the Parliament, or in the streets by mass demonstrations, or during fights, wars, or in short, in the actions performed by humans in the outside world. Rather, the only revolution that I understand as potentially being able to create a truly radical change is the revolution inside: an inner reconsideration of the way one observes oneself and life and honestly sees the rotten and corrupting forces in it. Hence, the birth of a sincere and inevitable process of wanting to change it.”

Tang Contemporary Art (Bangkok) is pleased to announce the exhibition, titled “Airport”, of Yin Zhaoyu will be held from 4th Nov 2010 to 4th Dec 2010.

Basic Infomation
Depicted in the natural landscape and portrait, the landscape paintings fused of the real images, colors alternating lights and shadows. This is also the most poetic depiction for the nature of human creation. Joseph Marroad William Turner(1775-1851), which was the most influential British landscape painter, with its skill, exquisite techniques to give the natural landscape emotional expressions, especially in light, air and moisture. The expressions bring into the work the subtle changes of nature.

In the field of contemporary art in China, Yin Zhaoyu is known for his style of landscape painting. Throughout the development process of paintings of Yin Zhaoyu, we can identify the techniques and it's depicted objects, Yin shows the unique ethos, that is, the color shifts from the natural state into the comprehensive mind of a personal perspective. The ample of exaggerated colors, actively changing and morphing within onto the other, these colors are the reflection of the emotions and ideas from the artist.

This time, the artist selects the airport as his main object of creations. In those vast and open artificial landscapes, the color that the artist used changes as if giving a spirit to the airport transforming it into an object of expression. In the images and the environment, we have always had a vague feeling of volatility and saw the ups and downs, the audience was also brush driven by the traction under the color of the artist, which leads to a direct association of the work's creative concept. Because of this connection with the viewer, the artist is able to establish attributes as an emotional landscape.

Originally from western Wisconsin, but now living in Bangkok, Justin released his first album in April, 2010.

Drawing inspiration from the likes of Ben Harper, Joe Purdy, Alexi Murdoch, Jack Johnson, Waylon Jennings and David Ruffin, Justin possesses a raw emotion in his vocals that reveals a soul laden with pain but redeemed by music.

Changing of Traffic Movement (ZOR) is not the type of gallery which the traditional art environment has accustomed us to. Neither is it an institution which reacts to artistic and political disputes and trends. It is not just a space and it is not managed by art councilors. Its form and shape is determined on the artists, critics and curators as well as people of various professions who enjoy art out of their own free will and who participate in the activities of ZOR in order to make changes.

ZOR was established by two people: Alicja Łukasiak and Grzegorz Drzod.

Taking into account the fact that both Her and Him are artists, it can be said that by opening up to group activities they want to directly influence the potential of the environment in which they happen to appear.This is therefore, an attempt to create an active space, an area which is conducive to creating art on all planes.

Since mid 2003 ZOR has been operating at Smolna Street in Warsaw. Apart from holding regular weekly presentations on 13 December that year ZOR initiated the Marshal Low Project which was a group demonstration against censorship in art. In the spring of 2004, as the guest of Laboratory Contemporary Art Center in Warsaw, ZOR was presented a mini festival of new generation of artist. All the projects, including the weekly as well the larger ones, are organised in compliance with the ''changed formula'' principle. Although the ZOR artists seem to stimulate each other they work on their own projects and invite others to cooperate with them.

“Grzegorz Drozd's artistic strategy is characteristic for juxtapositions of remote worlds, playing with conventions and producing situations too complex too describe. The project Universal features the use of art as a tool that the artist manipulates in order to unveil a new dimension of reality behind various tensions and contrasts. Following the chain of events, we finally get to the moment of the confrontation of avant-garde artists with everyday life of the Dudziarska housing estate inhabitants. The multi-layered story behind it makes us explore further, even more involving levels of the event occuring on the outskirts of Warsaw. Somewhere between an incineration plant and a railway track, 'in Poland, that is nowhere'. The act of repetition of simple geometrical forms on the walls of small blocks of flats with broken glass window panes may be perceived as a perverse test of avant-garde. Mondrians and Malewiczs, on one hand, dominate concrete surfaces; on the other hand, seem completely defenceless. Deprived of the history of European painting, museums with their musty atmosphere, the murals sting the eyes of the viewers like naked, tragicomic giants left at the mercy of local people and their comments. Thus, I ask myself the question, what is the point of reproducing colour and solid figure sequences from the beginning of the 20th century? What is the sense of repainting these large-scale compositions if no one will appreciate them in any sense? What is the point of exposing high art to risky confrontations and ridicule?” (Excerpt from the text Rudowęglowiec Ibuprom by Piotr Sikora, 2010).

The 1917 Revolution rejected everything that had the bourgeois flavour, or could be associated with the need to create a new art for a new society. The success of Revolution resulted in the victory of constructivism which aimed at the organization of man's life with the use of simple and functional forms. From that time on art values most what is functional, simple and rationalism-based. “The painting which used to be an icon to a bourgeois has died. The artist changed from a reproducer to a designer of the new world of objects.”

1918, the Netherlands. A couple of artists, members of a newly established group, announced a manifesto starting with words: “There is old and new awareness of time. The old one aims at the individual, while the new one at the universal. Their goal was to attain pure abstraction, i.e. total rejection of sensual reception of reality. Freedom from the limitations of individualism and randomness became the way to reach the absolute truth. Piet Mondrian wrote: “If modern people have not attained the ultimate goal, i.e. order and harmony, it means that the reason for it is man's individualism and uncontrollable subjectivism that introduces anxiety and tragedy in human existence.”

1993, Warsaw. Local self-governments came to an agreement in the matter of the construction of a housing estate at Dudziarska Street designed for socially unadapted families. In order not to establish a ghetto, the town hall came up with the idea to settle 30 percent of policemen families over there. The plan yet did not come out, and in 1995 the housing estate was settled by social misfits. In newly built flats there was no access to hot water or central heating. The blocks of flats constituted the only infrastructure. Three four-storey buildings with 216 flats altogether, were located near the incineration plant, in the close neighbourhood of numerous railway tracks cutting off effectively the Dudziarska inhabitants from the city, in the area surrounded by electricity pylons.

The nearest population is the prison for women surrounded by a high wall with barbed wire. The inhabitants of the new housing estate, detached from social relations and made to cover the distance of about 2.5 km to get to the nearest buildings, keep choosing the short-cut way across the railway tracks, which often ends up in a tragedy.

In 2010 ZOR begins work at the Dudziarska housing estate. His objective is to make the recipients think over and discuss the question of social exclusion. The artists believes that through art he will be able to focus the society's attention on the problem of the Dudziarska housing estate community. At the same time, he tries to analyse the ideas of modernism and contemporary visions of the construction of social order.

“Aqua, Blossom & Somebody” is an exhibition which originally was inspired by water, the origin of all creatures that sustains human’s life and helps lead their mind to the aesthetic. The aesthetic is simply the beauty of all flowers that makes the world lively. Viewers will be introduced to the diverse ideas and techniques which are applied to painting, printmaking and photographic art. The artists transmit their impression of the value and beauty of water and flowers as well as portray the search for inspiration to express the identity of the person/object appears in their imagination under the illusive and complicated context of the society.

The exhibition is separated into two parts. The first part is the area where more than 60 paintings and printmaking are exhibited. The exhibition Contemplation – Improvisation presents abstract prinmaking by two artists from Chiang Mai; Thongchai Yukantapornpong and Kitikong Tilokwattanotai. Although each artist has different approach and technique to apply to their artworks, they both searching for a new and unique method in order to create these spectacular works. The new woodcut technique and intaglio works show ideas, motives and the contemplating mind of the artists. The flat plates that are left with scratching marks recorded the improvisation that transmits feelings and emotions. Even though the two printmaking techniques project two conflict characters, the difference are silently spoken through the language of printmaking in which also interestingly brought the fresh notions to this type of fine art.

Project Title : “Another Journey” is a group exhibition by young blood artists : Theerawat Maysasitthivit and Parichat Jirasakwittaya. The works of both artists interpret the meaning of “Journey” through interactive Installation and Video Installation art form. Another Journey will be held at creative House BANGKOK inspired by Toyota is a non-profit space for anyone to express their creativity.

“Journey” a simple word that describes a movement from A to B. A surface of journey may be looked as though a direction from a starting point to an aimed destination. But a journey does not consist of only 2 points, it is involved a hidden interaction surrounding by many different elements which are a crucial part of molding experiences.

“Another Journey” is another journey. This journey brings another experience. This experience may be a new process of getting to know something for someone, at the same time it may be a repetitive feeling or action for someone. Either case, these are another journey that at least is a self-discovering.

Theerawat Maysasitthivit a young blood interactive installation artist presents his own experience of changing an everyday life environment through a new space. An environmental change causes emotional changes which make human adapting to suit in. This offers an interaction between compromises and conflicts besides an observation of the emotions, personal struggle, and the path breaking events of a contemporary society.

Whilst a performing artist who creates her debut site-specific performance art, Parichat Jirasakwittaya reflects the perspective of social online networking, especially facebook phenomenon by criticizing a journey of identities and messages from finger tips on keyboards that travel into the virtual reality and comparing it to an action of transmitting them in reality.

“Symbols of Buddha ‘s faith” is the latest solo exhibition by Arnan Ratchawang-Inn. After a four-year hiatus, he is excited about displaying his new works. The artist has created a form of Traditional Thai contemporary art which symbolically portrays faith, peace, purity and light based on Buddhism.

Arnan was raised in a rural atmosphere closely linked to local art and culture, customs and the Buddhist way of life. He absorbed all the power of artistic beauty, culture, tradition and faith. These strong influences motivated him to learn more and conduct extensive research into Thai art which led to the development of his highly unique work.

The artist received 1st Prize, Gold Medal in the Semi Tradition Art Section, at the 23rd Bua Luang Art Exhibition and participated in the Thai Contemporary Art Exhibition in 2009 at Moulin des Acacias, France.

Both Chaw Ei Thein and Htein Lin are recognised as Burma’s most profiled international artists. Chaw Ei Thein resides and has her artistic practice in New York and Htein Lin works and lives in London. STORIES OUT OF BURMA are their individual artistic dialogues that relates to their lives as artists in the Diaspora. Despite distances and time, Htein Lin and Chaw Ei Thein share a common ground both personally as artists and friends that relate prolifically to their shared personal histories in Burma.

In STORIES OUT OF BURMA, Chaw Ei Thein relates her personal physical and emotional struggles as a Burmese woman and as an artist living in New York. But her most poignant expressions relate to her comparative studies between her homeland and New York. Her series of paintings relate to her transient status and her ongoing efforts to bring her artistic voice to the forefront. In her accompanying video work, Chaw lends an eloquent uncertainty to the possibilities and politics of images and their circulation through space and time as she acknowledges the conflicts between her two worlds.

Htein Lin’s series of paintings for STORIES OUT OF BURMA offer intimate views of issues that are vital to his personal world as threads of Burma continue to remain an integral part of his world. Despite having digested a very cosmopolitan outlook and developed a broad image both as a painter and as a conceptual artist, Buddhism remains a key patent both to his personal self and his art. The realization of this is defined both in his paintings and in his performance piece specifically choreographed and produced for STORIES OUT OF BURMA whereby he aims to involve the viewer an opportunity to share his Burmese heritage.

Exotissimo in partnership with the Toot Yung Gallery are pleased to present What lies within us, a solo exhibition by the renowned Thai artist Haritorn Akarapat. With this new exhibition, Haritorn Akarapat proposes again a surprising “come back” to the Bangkok art scene; returning with a new strength, a new medium: Painting!

Haritorn Akarapat is an established sculptor in Thailand. His work is easily recognizable as he developed a strong identity during his over 20 years career, exploring new ways to approach the bronze and patina techniques. This sudden change of medium has been in the artist’s mind for several years. He was just waiting for it to be ripe as he says with a wide smile.
Akarapat’s long and challenging career is marked by intense periods of activity, usually culminating in a heroic masterpiece or group of master works, followed by startling renewal and rethinking of his subject.

This exhibition proposes to make a parallele between his previous sculpture works and his new paintings. It is a transit showcase of his work in progress. “What lies within us” is an occasion to see how the artist nourishes himself from his previous works to finally come to explore an unknown matter.
His paintings are a passionate explosion. Full of humour, freedom and odd colours...they are refreshing and ironic.The artist focuses on the power and simplicity of subject and the vibrancy of the colors . It is a subtil mirror like response to his latest solo show at Tang Contemporary Art Lapse of Memory. Again exploring the resonances between the pieces of a very numerous serie. As to grab the diversity of life and beings, Akarapat accumulates these distorted faces, skulls and animals with a furious appetite. They are painted intuitively, with quick and spontaneous flashes of bright, transparent colour. He treats the paintings as virtual figurations of theological speculation and vehicles for spiritual meditation. The figurative elements act as a mirror for the observer, the non-figurative elements invite contemplation.

References to buddhist theories, which in the earlier works had been more ambiguous, are more directly emphasised. These works have allowed Akarapat to revisit and excavate the past, pushing his own painterly vocabulary to create works that are fresh and liberated.

Gossip Gallery @Silom Galleria, one of the leading contemporary art galleries on Silom Road, is pleased to host Tanadol Derujijaroen’s contemporary collection of sculptures entitled ‘Journey’. This exhibition, which is the artist’s first solo show, will officially debut on Thursday, September 23, 2010, and will be available for public viewing through October 30, 2010.

Like all of us, Tanadol’s personal life is a collection of countless of experiences. Some he recalls fondly; others he wishes had never occurred. Nevertheless he remembers them all, and uses these memories with his considerable talent to create sculptures that represent his emotions and dreams. ‘As a child from a broken home, I’ve always dreamed of a perfect family. To realize this fantasy, I have created a group of sculptures, titled the “Family Series, which depict that part of my childhood that was wanting and incomplete. Created in bronze, these works depict the ideal family which I’ve been longing for.’

‘My other works being shown in this exhibition also dwell on personal memories and, in fact, serve as my personal diary, where I have mentally recorded my thoughts and experiences throughout my life. Each piece sums up my feelings toward a particular incident and conveys a story. Some figurines may look happy, but they conceal an emotional scar. Like “a picture (that) is worth a thousand words”, a sculpture can also speak. Despite the fact that these works speak about my personal life and dreams, I believe that these themes are concepts that everyone can relate to,’ Tanadol Derujijaroen concludes.

Khun Siripa Chotchung, the managing director of Gossip Gallery, said that ‘I am very excited that Gossip has been chosen to host Tanadol’s first solo showing. This exhibition not only speaks of the dreams and desires of one man, it illustrates a life long journey of a man that is worth documenting. I would like to thank Tanadol for allowing us a glimpse into his personal diary. I would also like to take this opportunity to invite everyone to take a journey with me and, in the process, come to understand Tanadol’s hopes and dreams through these amazing sculptures.’

‘Journey’ will be officially opened for public viewing on Thursday, September 23, 2010. This superb exhibition of sculptures by Tanadol Derujijaroen will be introduced by Dr.Kongkiat Opaswongkarn, the Chief Executive Officer of the Asia Plus Securities Public Company Limited (ASP) at 6:30 p.m. at the Gossip Gallery @Silom Galleria (BTS: Surasak Station). Tanadol’s fellow artists, interested private collectors, and members of the general public are invited to join in the celebration of the life and spirit of this incredible sculptor.

All 37 ‘Journey’ sculptures that are created from bronze, fiber glass and sandstone are available for purchase.

Thavibu Gallery will once again be staging an art exhibition, "SHELL
(SHOCKED)", by Thai emerging artist, Rattana Salee, from October 23 - November 2010 in Suite 307.

Thavibu Gallery is pleased to present the art exhibition Shell (Shocked) with new three-dimensional works by Rattana Salee. Marking her debut solo exhibition, the atmospheric sculptural installation comprises metal and plaster architectural structures that reflect the private and communal complexities of urban living.

Evidence of supposed progress, the Thai capital has become one vast construction site. The builder’s raucous rattle of drill and hammer shakes almost every street and soi in the city, while inhabitants seek mental and spiritual solace in the claustrophobic rectangular stacks they call home. Within such domestic confines occupants establish individual expressions as refuge, yet the world beyond continues to infiltrate.

Attempting a personal connection with the geographic, social, and psychological framework of the cityscape, Rattana’s haunting sculpted frames evoke the hundreds of decaying, incomplete towers that still pierce the capital’s skyline, residues of economic fallout from the 1997 financial crisis. Skeletons to human abandon, her lineal steel carcasses are also potent epitaphs to Bangkok’s recent street turmoil, which left burnt down buildings as disturbing reminders to the fragility of an expanding megalopolis.

Having participated in several domestic group exhibitions, 28-year-old Rattana is currently studying an MFA in Sculpture at Silpakorn Univeristy.

Shell (Shocked) is the sixth exhibition in the yearlong project, 3D@Thavibu, highlighting three-dimensional art in Suite 307 of Thavibu Gallery. Curated by Steven Pettifor, 3D@Thavibu presents a series of exhibitions featuring established and emergent Thai and international artists

Reflection
According to Hegel, ‘When we "have the measure of something", we have effectively recognized it, we have "fixed" it in our consciousness and differentiated it from others, but this recognition is only "implicit". When we make this recognition explicit, we "recognize" something, and this is the moment of reflection, the beginning of the stage of Essence’.

This is but one interpretation of the word ‘reflection’, but one that pin - points a current perception I am reflecting on through my practice. It is within the ambiguity of the word ‘reflection’ that my work during this residency has evolved. With this site – specific installation, I hope to touch upon notions of transience and transformation in life – those moments of change and realization that stand out, though subtle and ethereally, within the chain of experience.

Process/Method
I have approached this residency with a tentative framework based on my research on metamorphosis and transformation. During the process, I tried at all times to take the studio space and its emotional impact on me into consideration. My ideas kept on oscillating between various potential resolutions, which explains the variety of experiments undertaken during the residency. It has been a challenging yet rewarding experience to explore new working methods and materials – from interacting and collaborating with artist friends, technicians, specialists in various fields, to trying out unfamiliar material such as translucent sticker – film and polyethylene.

The blog was a very useful too to keep track of my seemingly incoherent ideas and interests. In the end, it was the link that pointed me towards the interpretation I felt most comfortable with.
